Metamaterials are periodic structures which allow advanced controlling of electromagnetic waves, so that behaviours not available in standard materials can be achieved. Given the broad range of applications where metamaterials can be applied, this topic has shown a large development in the last decades.

The goal of this course will complete the ESR’s training with an overview of metamaterials, focussing on their applications in the areas of sensing and information processing. The course will follow a hands-on approach, where the ESRs will have access to full-wave simulation SW tools to study different metamaterial configurations.

Terahertz imaging uses THz signals to evaluate the response of targets. This type of images has specific characteristics that makes it different from imaging in other frequency ranges. The goal of this course is providing training on the peculiarities of THz imaging, image acquisition architectures and different signal processing techniques which are applied in these systems. The course will follow a hands-on approach, where the ESRs will implement the different techniques on real signals.
