The goal of this course is to provide the doctoral students with a solid background on the design and simulation of 2D and 3D solid-state CMOS image sensors. The course will cover the different type of photosensing structures available in different CMOS standard and CIS technologies. Practical simulation examples using dedicated TCAD software from Silvaco will be analyzed.

This course addresses the fundamentals and the progress of state-of-the-art CMOS vision sensors or chips as analog to information converters (AIC). Differently from classical smart cameras implemented as a system made up of an image sensor and a companion digital platform, CMOS Vision Sensors- also known as- CVIS bring the processing close to the image sensor site, seeking for lower Size, Weight and Power (SWaP) figures. This course is hands-on oriented with guided homework through the instructor with circuit designs and CAD simulations.
